Local Towns South West Scotland
Guests staying at Blair Farm, near the pretty village of Barrhill,
may wish to travel to some of the larger towns in the area to enjoy
the sites, history or activities on offer. Whether you wish to take
a boat trip, take a stroll along a sandy beach or shop for good
quality crafts, Blair Farm provides ideal Holiday Accommodation
in South West Scotland for all these and more.
Girvan
(12 miles north) has a varied selection of individual shops, hotels
and restaurants, petrol stations and a swimming pool.
Boat trips can be arranged from Girvan Harbour to Ailsa Craig -
a dormant volcano which is a famous landmark off the Ayrshire Coast.
It is now a source of granite used for Curling Stones and home to
over 70,000 seabirds including one of the largest colonies of gannets
in the world.
During summer months, a trip round Ailsa Craig sailing from Girvan,
on The Waverly - the last sea-going Paddle Steamer, is highly recommended
as the views of the Ayrshire Coast are spectacular and the sight
of birds perched high on the cliff edges on Ailsa Craig are just
amazing.
Newton
Stewart (16 miles south) Is a busy small market town with a
variety of shops and numerous eating establishments. There are also
petrol stations, a small newly refurbished cinema and the closest
local Tourist Information Centre. The River Cree flows through the
centre of the town with a riverside walk.
Travelling south on A714 from Newton Stewart takes you to Wigtown
- Scotlands Book Town. Book lovers are sure to find the special
book they have been searching for!
The rugged coastline along Galloway and South Ayrshire offers some
wonderful sandy beaches, rocky pools and caves to explore. The coastal
town of Portpatrick, is a popular spot for our guests, with its
picturesque harbour, craft shops and wonderful places to eat out,
cliff walks and golf course.
Further along the coast at Port Logan, the BBC Drama '2000 acres
of Sky' was filmed.
